After getting in touch you will be offered an initial consultation where you can ask questions and decide whether therapy is right for you and whether you would be happy to work with me. This is also an opportunity for me learn more about you, your situation and your needs. This is to make sure that you get the right support.
Therapy sessions usually take place on a weekly basis for an hour at a time. You decide what it is you want to talk about and together we will explore how to approach your problems and issues. I will sometimes use creative interventions (art/craft, music, visualisations etc) to help you communicate/express thoughts and feelings that are difficult to talk about if this is something you are comfortable with. I won't tell you what to do but I will listen and reflect with you on what you have said and sometimes challenge your thinking in order to help give you greater understanding of yourself and your situation. With greater knowledge comes greater choice.
Psychodynamic therapy is about developing your self awareness and understanding how the past can influence present behaviour. You talk about what's going on in your life now and what's happened to you in the past and how your past experiences can affect how you think, feel and behave in the present. I will help you make the connections between the past and present and to reflect on how to start making decisions based on how you're feeling now instead of what has happened in the past.
